Teaching the Holocaust

Echoes & Reflections

Echoes & Reflections is a combined effort of three world leaders in Holocaust education: the Anti-Defamation League, the University of Southern California’s Shoah Foundation, and Yad Vashem. This website provides educators with the professional development and resources necessary to develop the knowledge, capacity, and practice required to responsibly and effectively teach the Holocaust. Their website also provides a teacher’s guide.

Facing History and Ourselves

Facing History and Ourselves has wonderful resources for addressing bigotry and hate of all kinds, including wonderful Holocaust resources. “We help students learn about hatred and bigotry so they can stop them from happening in the future.”

Antisemitism

The Anti-Defamation League

In addition to the Myths and Facts curriculum for middle and high schoolers, the ADL has multiple resources for addressing the issue of anti-Semitism. You can find the complete Challenging Anti-Semitism curriculum at the ADL’s website.

The ADL’s website has additional curriculum for all age groups covering topics from bullying and stereotypes to specific Holocaust curriculum options.

The Jewish Educator

The spring 2019 issue of The Jewish Educator was entitled ANTISEMITISM IN OUR TIME: How can we prepare and how do we respond? It has articles about a variety of responses, including how to talk to children and teens about the Holocaust.

The Holocaust Help Story (Spiritual Resistance)

Stealth Altruism

Stealth Altruism is a wonderful book and resource on spiritual resistance by Jews in the Holocaust, highlighting stories of Jews helping Jews, especially when it was forbidden. The book is full of stories you can use to bring this topic to life.
